Here is a photo of a N&W work train nearing the completion of daylighting Arion tunnel on the Peavine. It’s been noted that the daylighting process took over a year to complete in order to cause little delay in train service as possible. The first train to run through the daylight tunnel was noted as July 29, 1903. This photo is probably taken a short time before that date. 21 years before at this same location, the local newspapers reported that in June 1882, workers for the Cincinnati & Eastern RR were building the tunnel when a fuse going to a black powder charge failed to set it off. James Shanley and James Grace both went to drill it out when it exploded, horribly mangling both of them. Shanly, 25 years of age, had both eyeballs blown out of his head along with his arm ripped off and the other arm being broken.
