Cumbres and Toltec Fire Truck
Fire is always a concern along any steam operated railroad. But in the summer of 2018 in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico, it was a huge problem. We ended up on the Cumbres and Toltec because the Durango and Silverton had stopped all steam operation because of wildfires that at the time of our visit were threatening the D&S right of way.

So this old timer was not out just for show. The fire truck chases the train as far as it can and is available if any of the crews trailing the train spot a problem.

Now judging by this picture, you may think this old truck is coal fired. But I assure you, it is a pure oil burner.
