Sweet 16 - Halfway
Updated Saturday March 30 @ 7:30 AM

Bracket Busting Begins.

And that is OK.  We are deep enough in the tournament that some brackets are going to have to bust.  There just are enough games, teams and combinations left to accomodate everyone.

Somewhat concerning is we are down to just three picked champions.  If you have UConn, Purdue or Tennessee to win it all, you should feel pretty good right now, and may want to go purchase some gear for your team, 'cause you gonna be rootin' this weekend.

Of those picks, note the Tennessee people.  There are but two.  Katie Schwegman 2 is in eighth.  Safely inside the 25 point margin... the number of points awarded for picking the champion, she is a definite contendor to win this pool if things get "rocky", and Tennessee ends up on "top".

Nobody has an intact final four.  I mentioned yesterday that only Jay Robins and yours truly met that requirement.  The defeats of Houston and Marquetted busted those two brackets.

Looking at the standings, we have a new leader.  John Neltner scored a whopping 52 points  in the Sweet Sixteen.  That's more than Duke scored in beating Houston Friday night.  John correctly picked six of eight games, including the upcoming Duke versus NC State South region final. The next best score for the sweet 16 was 37.

Somebody outscores the field by fifteen points in a single round, there needs to be an investigation.  I do have a couple of leads.  First, this sheet is John Neltner 2.  There is no John Neltner 1.  Speculation is Hunter Biden is collaborating with a Trump operative to find out who the leading picks are in Russian and China.  So that sounds nefarious.  And second, there is a rumor John heavily used the expert picks available on CBS sports to make his picks.  Either could be a disqualifying factor if John were to win.  (Note: Any prize money vacated for ethical reasons automiatically defaults back to the hosue... its the only fair thing to do.)

Rob Collins drops to second, and more importantly lost his champion in Houston and is down to one final four team in Purdue.  Point potentials for Rob are pretty thin, and the cinderella story looks likes its going to end with a bunch of smashed flowers.

Zain Aziz, still chasing an unprecedented, and probably unethical (see end of John Neltner paragraph above) is in third and the leading bracket with Purdue winning it all.  Zain, LIke John, has three final four teams remaining.  Unlike John, having Purdue as your champion in a basketball pool is like having a three legged horse in the Kentucky derby.  I'm sorry Purdue fans, but the track record isn't good.

Fourth is Lisa Kim.  This is an outstanding performance for someone who I believe is in her first ever basketball bracket.  Now I'll admit I'm a bit suspicious.  I half expect to find out she is a basketball prodigy who's being betting games since she was three, and that I've just been suckered in.  Most notably, she's picked more games right so far than anyone else with 41.  I mention her now because her champion Arizona got skinned, and her points potential is lacking.  I think this may be the last time Lisa cracks the top five.

Jennifer Cleaveland is fifth and back futher than she's been in the tournament so far.  Still with UConn as her champion, she'll need to find a way past John Neltner.  That will be difficults as they share a champion and if they have the same runner up... Jennifer can do no better than second.  She desperately needs Duke to lose on Sunday (but don't we all.  Isn't the world simply a better place when Duke loses.  Just saying) to have any chance of passing John.

Three rounds down, three to go.  But only seven games remain.
