The All 25 Season Team has been selected. First and foremost I want to thank all of you who participated. There were over 1700 votes cast (more than 8600 actual player pairings voted on divided by 5 at a time). I know I voted several time, but no way did I get close to that number. I sincerely thank you for your participation.
The results will remain at the top of the article page for the remainder of the season. I’ll own the fact that the banner, while meant to be eye catching and colorful, is a touch obnoxious. But that’s OK, there are a lot of things I do that are a touch obnoxious. In case you are wondering, there is no pattern to the names, no hidden message to indicate number of votes or fantasy points scored or anything like that. Truth is, I counted the number of letters in each name and tried to balance the rows. Now if you are curious about that… 63 letters was the target for each row.
OK, I’m way off topic. Like Syndrome in the Incredibles movie, I am a sucker for a good monologue, and think I will use one now before revealing the All 25 Seasons team. Otherwise this article will be just a list of names.
WHY AN ALL 25 SEASONS TEAM?
The obvious answer is this is the 25th season of the Tailgaters Fantasy Football League. That is quite a milestone for something as informal as a group of friends coming together each fall to play a game. And it is a long way from meeting at someone’s house to conduct the draft because something like the internet hasn’t been invented yet, or at least isn’t readily available to everyone. OK, I actually kinda miss the coming together for the draft. Call me old fashioned.
Our league is fortunate to have three owners who’ve played all 25 seasons. Two more who are beyond 20 seasons. And another five at more than 10 seasons. In total, the TFFL has 202 seasons of combine fantasy experience in this league alone. I bet if you give the Bengals 202 seasons, they’ll even win a Super Bowl in that time. In case you are wondering, that would be Super Bowl CCII, and it will be your great great great great great grandchildren who will witness it.
Most of the things I do for the league a purely stat based. But for this, I wanted to make it participatory. Its not me as the commish who’s made this league successful. Sure, I could create twelve fantasy teams and play by myself, but that would be weird… and winning the championship would only be slightly less rewarding than only winning one in twenty five season. As I mentioned in the paragraph above, this league has a tremendous level of loyalty, and I really do appreciate that.
And for the folks in the GE Leagues, we are quickly building a similar history. The Brilliant Manufacturing League is in its eighth season. I still find that hard to believe. And I sincerely want to adapt my website to include much of that league’s history. It was with intent that you were included in this voting process, as many of you are life long football fans and familiar with the names on the list. Now, I don’t know that twenty five years is likely… something will have to go tragically wrong with my retirement plans for that to happen (yes, I know Joey B and his team are working on it). But I’m not close to retiring yet. And as long as GE will keep me around, even if they only keep me around to run the football league, we’ll keep going.
So I’ll wrap my monologue by repeating my sincere thank you. I hope you enjoyed the opportunity to vote, and below are the fruits of your labor.
THE SNUBS
When ever you hold a vote like this, there are bound to be snubs. I remember how I felt in high school when I was voted 147th Most Likely To Succeed. Well look at me know, running three successful fantasy football leagues. Mr. Rudy and Mrs Brady didn’t see that coming!
These snubs are based purely on my perspective. Players I thought would make it, players I most likely voted for. Hence how I know it was not just my votes in the result.
- John Elway
- Priest Holmes, a two time TFFL Player of the Year
- Edgerrin James
- Travis Kelce, I mean the dude is dating Taylor Swift. That’s bigger than when Tony Romo took Jessica Simpson to Mexico during the playoff bye week!
- Shannon Sharpe
THE ALL 25 SEASONS TEAM
QUARTERBACKS
Of the 25 players, the most popular group was the quarterbacks. Nine QBs in total made the team. That is not surprising given the nature of football. And when you look at the names, it’s kind of hard to argue with those who made it.
- Drew Brees
- Tom Brady
- Brett Favre
- Patrick Mahomes (A)
- Peyton Manning
- Dan Marino
- Aaron Rodgers (A)
- Kurt Warner
- Steve Young
WIDE RECEIVERS
Wide Receivers were the next most populated group with seven. I bit of a surprise given the importance of running backs in fantasy football. But this is another very solid list of players.
- Isaac Bruce
- Larry Fitzgerald
- Marvin Harrison
- Tyreek Hill (A)
- Randy Moss
- Terrell Owens
- Jerry Rice
RUNNING BACKS
Running backs were next with five players. I think it is indicative of how the running back position has changed, that running back careers are shorter and they are quickly swapped out for younger players. Noteworthy is there are no active players on the running backs list.
- Marshall Faulk
- Adrian Peterson
- Barry Sanders
- Emmitt Smith
- LaDainian Tominson
TIGHT ENDS
If there is any position that has emerged in the last twenty five years, it is the tight end position. The three names on this list are all time greats, and the list could have been longer.
- Antonio Gates
- Tony Gonzalez
- Rob Gronkowski
KICKERS
I wondered when I created this vote if any kickers would make it. There were a few names who I thought might be worthy of consideration, but knew it would be hard to crack the top twenty five. Well one did, and he is most certainly deserving.
There you have it. The twenty five NFL greats who have been voted the best players in the 25 seasons of the Tailgaters Fantasy Football League.
Come back tomorrow to see what owner and which all time great team are inducted into the TFFL HOF.
