The Gritz Blitz Falcons may be the best team in the Brilliant Manufacturing League as the playoffs start. The Falcons finish the season with a TOW and a POW, with Lamar Jackson scoring a league high 39 this weekend. But the Falcons also finish the season as the top scoring team in the league. This win was critical for the Falcons, as they finish tied with the Willow Run Flyers for first in the Lombardi division. But because of total points scored will earn the division title.

On the other end of this game was Grande Fantasmas, who with the loss slip out of the playoffs and into an early tee time. In the end, Fantasmas miss the playoffs by 12.3 points, or less than one point per week.

The beneficiary of Fantasma loss was Rimskis Raiders. Now it wasn’t a given the Raiders would make the playoffs. They had to knock off a tough team in what turned out to be the Halas division champion Steel City FooBall. The Raiders did pull off the win, getting 24 from Josh Allen. The 91-83 victory earns the Raiders the eighth seed next week.

Steel City FooBall was able to hold onto the Halas division title because their rival Old England Patriots fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes 105-80. The Buckeyes and Patriots actually finish in a three way tie for first in the Halas division, but FooBall wins the division by 110 points over the Patriots. The Patriots earn second place by 20 points over the Buckeyes.

I think that wraps up the games that directly effected playoffs spots. IN the other games, Prestige Worldwide closed out the Cincinnati Eagles season with a 106-70 Prestige victory. The Baloony Boiz asserted their dominance over Florida SeeBreeze 106-90. And the Willow Run Flyers came up short in their bid to win their division, but did hammers the Scammer 123-67.

BMFFL PLAYOFFS – QUARTERFINALS
The first round of playoffs are highlighted by three division rival rematches. And a rematch of last years championship game.

1. DIGITAL SCAMMERS v 8. RIMSKIS RAIDERS
These two teams met in Brilliant Bowl VII, the 2022 championship game. The Scammers came away with the upset victory a year ago. Looking for a repeat, the Scammers open these years playoff run against the same foe. The Scammers have been weak at QB all season, and are currently using Baker Mayfield under center. Not exactly who the Scammers would like to lead them into the playoffs.

The Raiders have already been playing elimination games. They had to win last week and bump friendly rival Grande Fantasmas out of the playoffs just to get here. Outside of a four game losing streak early in the season, the Raiders have bounced back and forth winning one or two games then losing one or two games.

The Scammers won both meeting during the regular season. I see more of the same this week. Scammer predicts Scammers win 99-96.

4. WILLOW RUN FLYERS v 5. OLD ENGLAND PATRIOTS
This is the only opening round game that does not feature division rivals. That does not mean these teams don’t have something in common. Both finished tied for first in their division only to lose the division, and the prize money, on total points scored for the season.

The Patriots won their only meeting of the season. That was way back in week one, a 96-73 decision. A lot has changed since then. Specifically in the second half of the season, the Flyers won six of seven and have scored more than 120 in three of their last four games.

Hard to see the Patriots keeping up with the Flyers. Flyers are just playing too well right now. Scammer predicts Flyers 104, Patiots 93.

2. GRITZ BLITZ FALCONS v 3. PRESTIGE WORLDWIDE
It is likely the Falcons are the best team in the league, and should be considered the favorite heading into the playoffs. Their Team of the Year title for most points scored certainly identifies them as a serious threat. The Falcons opened with seven wins in a row, then dropped four. They’ve won two of their last three to right the ship, including scoring 122 and 131 in consecutive weeks.

By Prestige Worldwide standards 2023 was a down year. A three game winning streak to close the season helped ensure Worldwide would have a post season. The closed the season at 7-7 to get the seven seed. But the Falcons are a tough draw.

These teams split during the regular season. Prestige won in week three when they were on their seven game winning streak. Prestige evened the score in week nine. The rubber match in this series plays out this weekend. Scammer predicts a Falcons victory 105-100.

3. STEEL CITY FOOBALL v 6. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES Hopefully the Buckeyes have someone to start after more than a dozen players entered the transfer portal. Oh! Wrong Buckeyes. Depressing when you finished tied for the best record in your division, but only get credit for a third place finish. Even worse when the team that took your division winner prize money is your open opponent.

That would be Steel City FooBall whos work during the entire season landed them the top spot. As mentioned, these are division rivals. The Buckeyes took both games during the regular season, weeks seven and thirteen.

Scammer thinks this will be the best game of the opening round. Scammer predicts FooBall 99, Buckeyes 94.

BEERCATS TAP PLAYOFF KEG

The Beercats had to win. You would not expect that for a team that has scored more points than any other team. But there is where the Beercats found themselves entering week fourteen. Not only did the Beercats win, they made sure they would win any matchup in the league. Their 128-100 win over TacoCorp earned them Team of the Week.

Lamar Jackson was Player of the Week for the Beercats. He had 39. David Njoku added 21. The win alone wasn’t not going to be enough for the Beercats. They needed help.

Help came in the form of Down the Drain. They knocked off the only team the Beercats could catch, Joanne, 100-77. Justin Fields was the game MVP as Down the Drain was looking to capture the Shula division crown at the wire. For Joanne, they fell into a tie with the Beercats, and lose the tiebreaker for the last playoff spot.

For Down the Drain to win the Shula Division, they either needed Happy to lose or outscore Happy by about ten points. Happy did not lose. They beat Momball in one of the best games of the year 82.8 – 82.5. Happy didn’t really have any big scorers, but a consistent team effort was just enough to out duel MomBall. With the win, both Happy and Down the Drain finished 9-5 and the division would come down to points. Points went Drains way by 8.8 points. That’s a narrow margin over an entire season.

None of the other games had a direct impact on playoff spots or division titles. Shakedown got back on the winning track by beating Scammers 118-77. Bane dropped the Rally Possums 117-60 and Transformation Worldwide got a parting win 103-93 over The Dak Knight.

EWFFL PLAYOFFS – QUARTERFINALS
1. THE DAK KNIGHT RISES v 8. BEERCATS
Fantasy football is not always fair. You play fourteen weeks to establish your self as the best team in the league and end up playing the higest scoring team in the league in the first round. The Dak Knight is use to such situations, springing traps set by the worst Gotham has to offer.

The Beercats finished fourth in what was clearly the best division in the league. The Landry division got all four teams in the playoffs, was home to the number one overall seed and has the Team of the Year. Being division mates, these teams played twice this year. Maybe little surprise given their records that the Dak Knight won both meetings. And the Dak Knight won six in a row before dropping their season finale.

I may be falling for the trap. I just can’t get over the points potential of the Beercats. Scammer predicts the Beercats 112, the Dak Knight 104.

4. HAPPY v 5. RALLY POSSUMS
After leading the Shula division much of the season, Happy was left disgruntled when the came up just short of the division title. As the top wildcard, they face the Rally Possums, the second place team out of the Landry division.

CJ Stroud has been a stud for much of the seasson. But a couple of down weeks have the passel (OK, I did have to look that up) scared stiff. Maybe the most comforting sign for the Possum is Happy will be starting Derek Carr at QB. Maybe what the Possum should focus on is their three game losing streak to end the season, while Happy has won three straight.

These teams met back in week three, with the Rally Possums winning. I see a much different fate this time. Happy 102, Rally Possums 85.

2. SHAKEDOWN v 7. SECRET SCAMMERS
Shakedown is one of the most perplexing teams I’ve ever seen in fantasy football. Winners of their first eight, they lost five in a row before beating the very same Scammers team they play in a week fourteen rematch to open the playoffs. Outside of one week, their point totals really haven’t fallen off. But their opponents have stepped their game up.

And that is where the problems start for the Scammers. The Scammers are not really equipped for stepping up their game. I never like predicting my own demise, but this one is pretty much a no brainer. Scammer predicts Shakedown 102-93.

3. DOWN THE DRAIN v 6. BANE
Down the Drain rolls into the playoffs on a high note, winning the Shula division. Life doesn’t get any easier with Bane coming to town. If you’ve ever seen The Dark Knight Rises, the movie, not the fantasy team, you know that Bane can wreak havoc on an opposing team’s stadium.

Baker Mayfield will lead the troops for Bane. My condolences. Jusin Fields will be under center for Down the Drain, giving Bane a fighting chance.

Down the Drain won the first meeting against Bane in week 8. This is a tough game to call, but Scammer predicts Bane 104, Down the Drain 103.

TEAM OF THE WEEK FINAL
It is official. The teams of the Brilliant Manufacturing Fantasy Football League have asserted themselves as the premier fantasy football league at GE. They won eight of the fourteen Team of the Week Awards, including the last five in a row.

By week nine, it looked like the Edision Works League would win this crown for sure. Since they had the highest scoring team, they only needed one more overall Team of the Week to clinch the title. But Grande Fantasmas kicked off a run in week ten that would carry the BMFFL to the end of the season.

Of the twenty four teams in the two leagues, twelve different teams won Team of the Week. Only three teams, FooBall, the Willow Run Flyers and Gritz Blitz Falcons earned two TOWs, and those second TOWs came in weeks twelve, thirteen and fourteen.

I am very pleased with the overall balance in both leagues.

ULTIMATE SURVIVOR - DOWN THE DRAIN
Now all is not lost for the Edison Works League. Last week we established the Edison Works League would be home to the Ultimate Survivor. It came down to the Dak Knight and Down the Drain. The Dak Knight scored an OK 90 points. But Down the Drain scored 100. That makes Down the Drain our Ultimate Survivor.

TO THE DEARLY DEPARTED
Four teams in each league find themselves dealing with a huge void in their life. Out of the playoffs, no lineup to set, the only thing left to do is prepare your players for their big bowl game at the end of the season. I’ll explain more in a couple weeks.

I do ask that teams eliminated from the playoffs not drop players and not pick up free agents. The intent is to not have teams eliminated influencing the results. I don’t actually have a way to control this, so it is an on your honor system. But please extend the courtesy of locking your rosters.

Also, I will have to come calling for entry fees not paid. I’ve been even more passive than usual. But the bills are coming due.
